LGBTQ+ librarians grapple with attacks on books - and on themselves

  • By CLAIRE SAVAGE - Associated Press

Worldwide Pride Month events are underway but they are coming at a time when many people who identify as LGBTQ+ say they are facing increasing difficulties at work, ranging from being repeatedly misgendered to physically assaulted. For gender nonconforming library workers in particular, they are also grappling with growing calls for book bans across the U.S., with books about gender identity, sexual orientation and race topping the list of most criticized titles and making the attacks all the more personal. The American Library Association documented the highest-ever number of titles targeted for censorship in 2023 in more than 20 years of tracking. Maia Kobabe’s coming-of-age story ‘Gender Queer’ was the most criticized library book for the third straight year.

Water emergency halts tourist arrivals at Italy's popular Capri island

  • AP

A water emergency has prompted the mayor of Capri — one of Italy’s most popular islands — to order a halt to the arrival of tourists, in a crisis that has deprived some areas of any water supply. Mayor Paolo Falco said Saturday that without a water supply, it is impossible to guarantee essential services to “thousands of people” who travel to the island daily during the tourist season. The emergency was caused by a failure in the mainland's water system that provides vital supplies to the world-known island. The mayor's decision has created long lines of passengers at the ticket offices in the ports of the southern city of Naples, the departing point for most ferries to Capri.

Investigation of Russian hack on London hospitals may take weeks amid worries over online data dump

  • By PAN PYLAS - Associated Press

An investigation into a ransomware attack earlier this month on London hospitals by the Russian group Qilin could take weeks to complete with some patients needing to undergo repeat tests. Hundreds of operations and appointments are still being canceled more than two weeks after the June 3 attack on the state-run National Health Service provider of pathology services primarily in southeast London. NHS England said Friday that it has been “made aware” that data connected to the attack have been published online. According to Saturday’s edition of the Guardian newspaper, records covering 300 million patient interactions, including the results of blood tests for HIV and cancer, were stolen during the attack.

Mickoski is expected to easily win Sunday’s vote, having secured the support of 78 lawmakers in the 120-seat house. His key domestic challenges in government will include enhancing the rule of law while addressing corruption and poverty and reviving a sluggish economy.

The Oilers join 9 other NHL teams that forced a Game 7 after trailing a series 3-0

  • By JOSH DUBOW - AP Sports Writer

The Edmonton Oilers aren’t the first team in the NHL to fight back from 3-0 down in a best-of-seven series to force a deciding contest. This is the 10th time it has happened in 211 opportunities in NHL history and the first in 10 years. Based on history, the momentum from three straight wins doesn’t always carry over into a Game 7. Only four of the nine previous teams to fight back and force a seventh game finished the job, with the Los Angeles Kings the last to pull off the feat in the 2014 first-round against the San Jose Sharks.

Oilers' penalty kill has made a major difference in the Stanley Cup Final against the Panthers

  • By STEPHEN WHYNO - AP Hockey Writer

The Edmonton Oilers' penalty kill has been one of the major difference makers in the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers. The unit has gone 19 of 20 and outscored Florida's power play with two short-handed goals. Edmonton's kill has been one of the hallmarks of this playoff run, allowing just four goals in 68 opportunities. That's an NHL postseason-best 94.1%. It's a big reason why the Oilers erased a 3-0 deficit in the final to force a deciding Game 7 Monday night at Florida.

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, criticized for saying West provoked Putin to invade Ukraine

  • By PAN PYLAS - Associated Press

Nigel Farage, leader of the right-wing Reform U.K. party, is facing wide-ranging criticism over his claim that the West provoked Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine. In a BBC television interview broadcast Friday evening, Farage drew a link between the expansion of NATO and the European Union eastwards over the past few decades and the invasion. Farage’s critics from across the political spectrum slammed his statement, with many describing him as a Putin apologist. This is the first general election that Reform U.K. is contesting and it has enjoyed a lift in the polls, mainly at the expense of the governing Conservatives.

Russian strikes continue to target Ukrainian energy facilities

Russia fired 16 missiles and 13 Shahed drones at energy facilities and critical infrastructure in an overnight attack on Ukraine, officials in Kyiv said Saturday morning, damaging energy facilities in the country’s southeast and west and injuring at least two energy workers. Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted 12 of the 16 missiles and all 13 drones launched by Russia, the air force said. Power grid operator Ukrenergo said the strikes damaged equipment at facilities in Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhzhia and western Lviv regions. Two energy workers were injured in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to local officials. With no major changes reported along the 1,000-kilometer front line, both sides in the war have taken aim at infrastructure targets.
